This optical mechanical sighting instrument was used for indirect fire calculations, primarily with the Vickers Medium Machine Gun and also adaptable for small artillery pieces and mortars. Its purpose was to accurately measure elevation and depression in degrees, allowing crews to lay down sustained indirect fire on pre registered targets.
